Map: Cameron Highlands from Ipoh
The journey from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands generally takes around 1.5–2.5 hours by car, depending on traffic, weather, your chosen route and where you’re staying in Cameron Highlands. Cameron Highlands is a region rather than a single town, so your journey time will depend on exactly where you’re staying.
The distance from Ipoh to Tanah Rata is approximately 90–100 kilometres via Simpang Pulai. Other destinations, such as Brinchang, are at different distances.
There are two main driving routes: via Simpang Pulai or via Tapah. The Simpang Pulai route is generally the more convenient option when travelling directly from Ipoh, while the older Tapah route has narrower, winding sections.
Both routes pass through mountainous terrain, so check current road conditions before setting off, particularly during periods of heavy rain.

Option 1: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands Bus

Taking the bus is the cheapest way to travel from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands. It’s also relatively straightforward, with direct services to Tanah Rata.
The journey itself generally takes around 2–2.5 hours, although traffic and weather can affect travel times. Tickets start at approximately RM30 per person.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the road can be narrow and winding as the bus goes up, down and around the hills. I recommend you book as far ahead as possible using the link below so you can select a seat in the front row for a more comfortable journey.

Ipoh To Cameron Highlands Bus Schedule
Buses operate daily, with operators including Unititi Express and CS Travel.
Current advertised departures start at approximately 10:15am, with services available until 5pm. However, timetables and availability can change, so I recommend checking the schedule for your actual travel date here.
Where Does The Bus Depart From?
Buses depart from Terminal Meru Raya, also known as Terminal Amanjaya, outside central Ipoh.
Allow approximately 20–30 minutes to reach the terminal from central Ipoh, depending on traffic. You can take a taxi or Grab, or investigate local bus connections if you have more time.
If you’re travelling from Ipoh Airport, you’ll also need to make your way to Terminal Meru Raya first. There is no direct scheduled airport-to-Cameron-Highlands express bus, so taking a Grab or taxi to the bus terminal is generally the easiest option.
Arriving In Cameron Highlands
The bus arrives at Tanah Rata Bus Terminal, also known as Terminal Freesia.
If your accommodation is in Tanah Rata, you may be able to walk there. Otherwise, arrange a taxi or hotel pickup, particularly if you’re staying in Brinchang or elsewhere in Cameron Highlands.
The journey involves winding mountain roads, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, consider bringing your usual medication.
I recommend booking ahead during weekends, school holidays and other busy travel periods.

Option 2: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands Taxi

If you don’t want to take public transport or drive yourself, a private taxi or transfer is the easiest way to travel from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands.
The journey generally takes around 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and where you’re staying.
As a guide, allow approximately RM500–550 for a pre-booked private transfer, although the actual price depends on the operator, vehicle and pickup and drop-off locations.
I recommend arranging your transfer in advance rather than relying on finding a taxi willing to make the journey, particularly for the return trip from Cameron Highlands.
The biggest advantage is that you can be collected directly from your hotel or Ipoh Airport and dropped at your accommodation in Cameron Highlands. There’s no need to travel to a bus terminal or carry your luggage between different forms of transport.
Although this is expensive for a solo traveller, it can be much more appealing for families or groups who can share the cost.
Option 3: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands By Car

Driving yourself is another great way to travel from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands, particularly if you want the flexibility to stop along the way or explore the highlands at your own pace.
There are two main routes:
Via Simpang Pulai: This is generally the route I’d recommend from Ipoh. It follows the newer road into Cameron Highlands, entering via Kampung Raja before continuing towards Brinchang and Tanah Rata. The road is generally wider and less winding than the older Tapah route, although there are still mountain bends and some narrower sections. Allow approximately 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on your destination and traffic.
Via Tapah: This is the older route into Cameron Highlands, following Route 59 through Ringlet towards Tanah Rata. It involves a longer detour when starting from Ipoh and has narrower, steeper and more winding sections. However, it’s worth considering if you specifically want to visit Lata Iskandar waterfall along the way.
Whichever route you choose, check current road conditions before departing, especially during periods of heavy rain when landslides and road closures can occur.

Final Words
Travelling between Ipoh and Cameron Highlands is relatively straightforward, whether you prefer taking a bus, booking a private transfer or driving yourself.
For most budget travellers, I recommend the bus. It’s inexpensive and takes you directly to Tanah Rata, although you’ll need to arrange transport to and from the bus terminals.
If you’re travelling as a family or have plenty of luggage, a private transfer is the easiest option. However, if you want to explore Cameron Highlands independently, hiring a car is worth considering. Having your own transport makes it much easier to visit the tea plantations, strawberry farms and other attractions spread throughout the area.
Whichever option you choose, allow some flexibility in your travel plans, particularly during weekends, public holidays and periods of heavy rain.
